Post-Christmas Activity Ideas

Christmas day may have come and gone in a flash, but that doesn’t mean the fun and sparkle is over! In that confusing time after Christmas, when you don’t know what day it is or how many selection boxes have been consumed, why not join tickit on a post-Christmas adventure walk?

Here are some of our favourite tickit products to take on our outdoor adventures:

  • Easy Hold Magnifier

One of our flagship products, and so handy you won’t understand how much you needed it until you own one yourself! This magnifier offers 2x magnification (with an additional insert lens capable of 3x magnification). It is encased in beautiful, smooth wood with large handles, perfect for small hands. It is slim and lightweight so can be popped in a small bag or pocket…or easily held for a whole walk! In fact, you probably won’t want to put it away, so you are ready to study leaves and minibeasts quickly.

Getting outside and observing leaves and minibeasts in winter offers wonderful scientific learning opportunities. By carefully examining fallen leaves and tiny creatures, children develop keen observation skills and gain an appreciation for the ways plants and insects adapt to winter conditions. These explorations encourage scientific curiosity, enhance sensory awareness, and provide hands-on learning about local and natural environments, encouraging a deeper understanding of biological systems and environmental interactions.

  • Sensory Reflective Colour Burst Balls

These lovely, metal balls are fascinating and turn any surroundings into a rainbow wonderland! Being made of stainless steel they are naturally anti-bacterial and robust, so why not take them outside on your winter walk! They take on their surrounding temperature, so make sure you observe how they feel before you go outdoors and then again while you are outside. Ask the children to note this differences to spark interest and conversation around different materials and their ability to conduct heat.

The warped, fisheye reflection they give is perfect for exploring the environment from a different perspective – why not take a sketch pad and take the opportunity to draw the reflection you see? This offers a multisensory learning experience that develops observational skills, artistic techniques, and scientific understanding through direct engagement with the natural environment. By capturing winter landscapes through the Sensory Reflective Colour Burst Balls, children can enhance their visual perception, learn to notice subtle details, and develop creative skills while building a deeper connection with seasonal changes.

  • Translucent Colour Viewers

Perfect for collecting and storing your natural treasures (remember to never pick anything green and living). These colourful, translucent pots come with a magnifier lid for the in-depth study of natural items, such as acorns, leaves, twigs and feathers. Take them on your outdoor adventures and collect items for further exploration at home.

Why not go on a winter rainbow walk by trying to find plants and natural objects that match each pot. These can either be collected in the pot itself or the magnifier lid can be removed to observe your findings. Winter rainbow walks can help children develop keen observational skills by searching for subtle colours in a seemingly dormant landscape. This activity encourages scientific curiosity, enhances colour recognition, and teaches children to appreciate the hidden diversity and beauty of winter environments. By actively exploring and identifying different coloured natural elements, children learn about plant adaptation, seasonal changes, and develop a deeper connection with the natural world.

  • Easy Hold Glitter Panel

Our tickit Easy Hold Glitter Panels are relaxing and intriguing, turning the world around you into a mesmerising glitter storm!

These are ideal for taking on your winer walks as, like the Easy Hold Magnifier, they are slim and lightweight, but they also provide a unique and captivating viewpoint as you watch the glitter encased within the panel catch the low winter sunlight as it swirls and falls. This will promote mindfulness and a sense of calm in nature, as well as encouraging descriptive language as you discuss the patterns the glitter falls in and what you can see as the landscape behind begins to emerge.

  • Seasonal Woodland Trees

Made of sustainable solid wood and in ten beautiful tonal shades of brown, green, red, orange and yellow, these smooth, tactile and natural tree figures represent the seasonal changes throughout spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Not only are these ideal for small world play, but they make a brilliant companion on a walk or outdoor activity. Why not try and see if you can spot any similarities between your tickit Woodland Trees and the trees outside, do they match in colour or shape? Activities like this will help develop descriptive language skills and open conversation about why trees are so important in our lives. By taking them outside with you and making the active connection to nature, you can then carry on the conversation and topic area at home!

  • Translucent Colour Pot Set

Vibrant, compact and stackable, these pots offer endless play opportunities and can transforms a winter walk or outdoor activity into an immersive learning experience by allowing children to collect, sort, and examine natural treasures with a playful scientific approach.

Collect tiny treasures like stones, pretty leaves, or frosty twigs, and sort them by colour and shape. These magical little pots encourage observation, help develop fine motor skills, and support colour recognition through hands-on play and exploration, making your winter walk a fun learning journey full of discovery and excitement.
